‘My Husband Drops N500 To Take Care Of Our Five Kids, I Want A Divorce’

Mrs Blessing Okafor, a mother of five, dragged her husband Godwin Okafor to a customary court sitting at Sangotedo, Ajah, seeking for divorce.

Blessing Okafor who has been married for 12 years stated that her husband has been irresponsible and constantly beating her when she asked for money.

‘’My lord, since I got married to him, each time I asked for money he refuses to give me, but I know for sure that whenever he is out, he takes care of himself. Sometimes, he drops just 500 naira to take care of five children. Our children are currently not in any school and it is all his fault” said Blessing.

“I sell corn by the roadside, which is what my children and I depend on. Meanwhile, my husband has a shop where he sells fairly used (akube) clothes, yet he brings only 500 naira’’ She told the court.

In response to the allegations, Mr Okafor denied them all, including giving her 500 naira to take care of the children.

‘’My wife is telling lies my lord. I give her 2000 naira daily and when I am broke, I give 1,500 naira. When I do not make sales, I make sure I buy foodstuff. As for the school, I have seen a school to enroll them in. By next month, they will start going to school’’ He said

When asked for the exact date he last provided the N2,000 or N1,500, Mr Okafor was unable to provide an answer.

After the jury had listened to the couple, for the sake of monitoring Okafor’s level of responsibility according to his claim, he was ordered to drop the daily N2,000 or N1,500 for his wife through the court registrar.

The case was however adjourned to 1st of November 2019.
